서수석(徐壽錫)의 『춘추』 경학을 통해 본 19세기 조선조 춘추학의 연구방법론

서수석은 『춘추』의 성격을 ‘역사서 중의 경서[史中之經]’라고 규정하고, 『춘추』라는 책 자체의 역사적이고 철학적인 가치를 밝히고자 하였다. 이것은 『춘추』가 단순히 책 속의 이론이 아니라 현실의 역사를 추동하는 살아 있는 진리임을 규명하는 작업이다. 이러한 작업을 위해 그는 크게 두 가지의 연구방법을 사용하였다. 첫째, 『춘추』가 지어질 수밖에 없었던 역사적 배경을 분석함으로써 『춘추』가 시대적 요청의 산물임을 밝히는 작업이다. 춘추시대의 정치적 혼란상을 객관적으로 분석하여, 『춘추』의 출현이 시대적 요청에 의한 불가피한 선택이었음을 규명함으로써 『춘추』의 필수불가결한 존재 이유를 명확하게 드러내 밝혔다. 둘째, 『춘추』의 천자로서의 역할을 탐색함으로써 정치 현실에서 발휘된 『춘추』의 실질적 공능을 확인하는 작업이다. 먼저 당시 천자의 위상 추락과 역할 부재의 현실을 냉철하게 분석하여, 『춘추』가 천자의 역할을 수행하게 된 배경을 밝혔다. 그리고 『춘추』가 천자로서 현실 정치에 개입한 양상을 구체적으로 살펴봄으로써 『춘추』의 실질적인 존재 가치를 제고시켰다. 그의 연구방법은 역사에 대한 객관적 분석을 통해 『춘추』에 담긴 시대의식의 실체를 파악하는 것이 주요 목적이라고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
Seo Suseok defined Chunqiu as a ‘Confucian classic among history books [史中之經]’ and tried to clarify historical and philosophical values of the book Chunqiu itself. It is to prove that Chunqiu is simply not a theory in a book but a living truth driving history in reality. For this purpose, he largely applied two sets of research methodology. First, he analyzed historical background in which Chunqiu was destined to be written in order to clarify that Chunqiu was a result from the demands of the times. He objectively analyzed political chaos of Chunqiu period and clarified that advent of Chunqiu was an unavoidable choice due to the demands of the times, which was to reveal the reason why Chunqiu was the essential. Second, he explored the role of Chunqiu as a son of Heaven to identify actual effect of Chunqiu exerted in political reality. He realistically analyzed the fallen status of son of Heaven and absence of that role in order to examine the background in which Chunqiu came to serve as the role of son of Heaven. In addition, he specifically investigated the aspects that Chunqiu intervened in realistic politics as son of Heaven, which consequently improved the actual values of existence of Chunqiu. The primary aim of his methodology is to grasp substance in consciousness of the times demonstrated in Chunqiu through objective analysis on history.
