본 논문은 곽종석(郭鍾錫)의 『춘추』 문답에 보이는 토론의 주요 주제를 분석함으로써 19세기 조선조 『춘추』 경학의 학술적 의미를 밝히는 글이다. 선행 연구에서는 문답의 핵심 주제 중의 하나인 『춘추』 경전 전반에 대한 쟁점을 다루었고, 이 연구는 『춘추』의 기록 방식과 독법을 대상으로 한 후속 작업이다. 세부적으로는 『춘추』 대의(大義)에 대한 접근법과 『춘추』 경문(經文)에 입각한 객관적 독법이라는 두 가지 쟁점을 논의의 대상으로 삼았다. 먼저 곽종석은 『춘추』 경문이 역사적 사실을 기록한 객관적 자료이기 때문에 『춘추』의 대의도 또한 철저하게 경문을 통해 밝혀야 한다는 독법의 원칙을 제시하였다. 그리고 기존의 해석이 『춘추』 필법이나 의리 중심으로 이루어진 것을 비판하고, 철저하게 경문 자체의 분석을 통한 객관적인 해석에 치중함으로써 해석의 합리성과 정당성을 확보하려고 노력하였다. 이와 같은 곽종석과 문인의 『춘추』 경학은 19세기의 고증학적이고 실학적인 학풍이 충실하게 반영되었다는 점에서 조선조 춘추학의 전개 과정에서 매우 중요한 학술사적 의미를 지닌다고 평가할 수 있다.
Abstract
This paper analyzes major discussion topics shown on Chunqiu interlocution of Gwak Jong-seok (郭鍾錫) and aims to clarify academic significance of the study on Confucian classics of Chunqiu in the 19th-century Joseon. The preceding study covered the overall issues of the scripture Chunqiu, one of main themes of interlocution; this study is a follow-up for its record method and reading. The study’s discussion targets in detail are the approach to great cause (大義) in Chunqiu and objective reading based on Chunqiu scripture. First, Gwak Jong-seok suggested the principle of reading; as Chunqiu scripture is an objective material that records historical facts, the great cause of Chunqiu should also be clarified thoroughly through the scripture. He criticized that existing interpretation was done centering around the writing style or loyalty of Chunqiu and stressed objective interpretation through analysis on the scripture itself in order to ensure rationality and justification of interpretation. Given that such study on Confucian classics of Chunqiu among Gwak Jong-seok and the literary class fully reflected the academic trend in the 19th-century documental archaeology and Silhak (Realist School of Confucianism), it can be appreciated to have a very important meaning in academic history of developing Chunqiu study in Joseon period.
