Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the intention to compile the diary of the Namhan-san fortress and discover its historical significance. This text was set in two political events in the late Chosŏn Dynasty. One thing was based on the resistance between Namhan-san fortress and Kanghwa Island during the second Manchu Invasion, and the other was about the practice of Neo-Confucianism to a position of unassailable ideology carried out by the Westerners faction during King Sukchong(1674-1720). Kwanghaegun was forced from the throne by the Westerners faction, to be succeeded by King Injo(1623-1649). Emperor T’ai Tsung of the Later Chin changed the name of his new state to Ch’ing and sent an embassy to Korea with the demand that Chosŏn acknowledge his suzerainty. The Korean response to this demand was one of total rejection, and King Injo refused either to receive the Ch’ing envoys or the documents they carried. Thus the second Manchu invasion was visited upon Korea. Unfortunately the Namhan-san fortress was poorly sup* Doctor, Department of Korean History, Seoul National University plied and the expected relief force did not arrive. To make matters worse, Kanghwa quickly fell to the Manchus. Injo decided to surrender. By the terms of the surrender Chosŏn vowed to quit its ties with Ming, to do homage to Ch’ing as the suzerain power. But the smoldering enmity this aroused was fanned by Korea’s feelings of cultural superiority to give rise to an intense hostility toward Ch’ing. The plan of King Hyojong(1649-1659), to launch a northern expedition was born of this festering hostility. Namhan-san fortress and Kanghwa Island were spaces of painful memories of losing the war, but they were a moral symbol that fought to protect the ideology of Neo-Confucianism. It seems that the compilator tried to contain this in the diary of the Namhan-san fortress. The other context of this old literature was the practice of Neo-Confucianism to a position of impregnable dogma carried out by the Westerners faction during King Sukchong. This literature revealed the legitimacy of the Westerners faction as a powerful class who completed the Neo-Confucianism society through his personal biography of Pak T’ae-bo, and through his moral life, it expressed the consciousness that the Young Doctrine faction succeeded the Westerners.
