Abstract
This paper examines East of the River Region’s reading session during the transition to modernity, drawing on Yi Jin-sang’s academic background and achievements. Yi Jin-sang’s theories sparked a stir in the academic community at the time. At its core was the “mind equals principle”. However, the fact that “mind equals principle” was identical to the doctrines of Wang Yang-ming’s formulation further exacerbated the issue. This was because, in Joseon Neo-Confucianism, the doctrines of Wang Yang-ming was deemed heretical after Yi Hwang. East of the River Region during the transition to modernity exhibited a unique dynamic. Intellectuals from diverse schools of thought, with differing academic backgrounds, coexisted, and their respective theories simultaneously engaged in debate, critique, and mutual understanding. This is the rationale for examining the East of the River Region’s reading session. Early in his academic career, Yi Jin-sang attended reading session with his uncle, Yi Won-jo, who led the reading session. He also assisted his uncle and recorded records of the reading session. After Yi Won-jo’s death, Yi Jin-sang assumed the role of the chief of reading session. The most significant events of his tenure were the Sancheonjae reading session and the Seonseoksa reading session. The Sancheonjae reading session promoted academic unity and the understanding and coordination of differing theories, while the Seonseoksa reading session promoted academic homogeneity and exchanges with scholars from East of the River Region. After Yi Jin-sang’s death, the reading session of his students, including Heo Yu, maintained Yi Jin-sang’s legacy while also discussing a wider range of topics. A notable feature of these gatherings was that they were held in conjunction with the village agreement and village community. The East of the River Region, where the Hanju School, Jeongjae School, Nosa School, and Seongjae School all worked together, understood each other’s theories and shared a common purpose for the crumbling Joseon Dynasty through volunteer army activities and the independence movement. This made it a place of both academic and political significance.
