Abstract

Considering the structures of trade and investments......This paper analyzes Yeom Sang-seop’s The Frog in the Specimen Room and Mo Yan’s Frog to explore how the symbolic system of writing shapes or deconstructs individual subjectivity, and how these written symbols, when combined with discourses of power, function as instruments of 'biopolitics' that control and organize life. Both works, set against the backdrop of Japanese-occupied Korea and China's one-child policy era, narrate the processes of power, symbolic systems, and subject deconstruction surrounding life. Using Barthes' theory of myth, Lacan's theories of the Symbolic and the Real, and Foucault’s concept of biopolitics as theoretical frameworks, the paper analyzes how the text's use of letters, images, and narrative structures induces a clash between the symbolic order and the Real, and how, within this process, subjectivity is either deconstructed or reconstructed. In The Frog in the Specimen Room, the first-person narrator, “I,” observes the specimen, Kim Chang-eok, and the frog within the confines of the closed linguistic space of the specimen room, trapping them between life and death. In this process, “I” taxidermizes the other through scientific and linguistic classification but ultimately loses their own identity within the very taxidermized symbols. The long-haired guest and the beggar function as others who, outside the classification system, evoke the underside of life and symbolically reveal the narrator’s repressed unconscious and fractures. In Frog, the aunt fulfills the role assigned by state power, functioning as a mythic symbol that justifies birth control. At the same time, through repetitive re-narration within the story, she exposes the fractures of the repressed Real. Through this comparison, the paper argues that written symbols function not merely as tools for conveying meaning but as mediators of power and mechanisms that induce the collapse of subjectivity.
