Abstract

(Background and Purpose) In the modern era known as the cultural era, a variety of spaces that can accommodate cultural needs are required. However, compared to the new cultural space built with huge budget investment, the use of idle facilities is a more reasonable and sustainable countermeasure. The purpose of this research is to derive an analysis framework from the perspective of environment, society, economy, and cultural sustainability through the theoretical investigation of there generation of idle industrial facilities and the complex cultural space, and centering on sustainable development. Moreover, based on the evaluation index of development, the sustainability of the regeneration of idle industrial space into the complex cultural space, taking Kiswire Center in Busan as a representative example, is analyzed. (Method) First, through theoretical investigation and prior research, the regeneration of idle industrial facilities and the concept of complex cultural space are mastered, and the details and characteristics of each concept are analyzed. Second, based on the investigation of the concept of sustainability, the sustainability evaluation index of the composite cultural space for the regeneration of idle industrial facilities is derived. Third, the Kiswire Center, an example of Busan’s representative comprehensive cultural space regeneration, is selected and visited. Through the derived evaluation indicators, the status quo, environment, society, economy, and cultural sustainability are evaluated. (Results) The results are as follows: In the Kiswire Center, based on the preservation of history and the environment, the old industrial heritage factory was designed as a f1963 exhibition area, and the idle space was designed as an amphitheater, cafes, bookstores, etc. By creating a business district with cultural characteristics and guiding the economic revival in the region, the vitality of the surrounding economy is enhanced. In addition, by sharing the philosophy and values of the company with residents and using abandoned factories, other areas of Busan are provided with high cultural opportunities that cannot be experienced, which improves cultural possibilities and promotes the development of regional culture and art. (Conclusions) As a regenerative cultural and artistic space for idle industrial facilities of enterprises, its public function has always been excellent, which is also a good example of this possibility from the sustainability. However, with regard to promoting the participation of local residents in local communities, it is necessary to further strengthen its function as a community communication platform. Besides, in terms of cultural sustainability, the characteristics of Busan, which are different from other regions, must also be considered, and regional-based cultural products should be developed.
