Abstract
(Background and Purpose) Modern cities face various potential risks such as the collapse of environmental, social, economic, and infrastructure due to external shocks and the increase in idle spaces due to the decrease in the school-age population. These idle spaces are required as resources to restore communities and create cultural values beyond neglected spaces. In the process of converting idle industrial facilities into complex cultural spaces, it is necessary to preserve the location and historicity and promote economic and social recovery by activating residents’ participation and exchange. This study is crucial to help realize the sustainability of space by applying the characteristics of resilience for physical preservation and a new spatial identity in the process of regenerating complex cultural spaces. (Method) This study analyzed cases of idle industrial facilities converted to regenerate local cultural spaces among the buildings that won the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture. The study focused on a regeneration project conducted since 2010. The concept of resilience and a theoretical framework for transforming complex cultural spaces were established through a literature search. The case analysis was centered on practical, contextual, and inclusive resilience. Accordingly, the theoretical basis was verified, and practical applicability was discussed. (Results) Regarding the resilience elements of idle industrial facilities, practical resilience was derived. It connects the past and present based on practicality and variability in physical spaces, enabling sustainable social and economic contributions, and was categorized into temporal stratification and social mediation. Furthermore, by fusing tradition and modern interpretation, contextual resilience, which can be interpreted across multiple layers through user-centered cultural depth, was derived and categorized into cultural depth and convergent cognition. It provided an open relationship and subjective experience. Inclusive resilience was derived, which helps users experience symbolic values through space, and was categorized into cultural depth and subjective experience. (Conclusions) This study proposed a design that combines modern functions and preserves existing structures to enable sustainable use and satisfy modern needs while respecting the structural values of the past. It offered a direction for creating local brand value by accepting environmental and social demands that reflect regional characteristics and harmonizing the space with the surrounding environment. Users could connect the past and present through emotional and cultural experiences. In such a space, sensory immersion and cultural content creation can take place, demonstrating that user participation contributes to the realization of resilience and sustainability.
