Abstract
(Background and Purpose) The growing prevalence of single-person households has led to increased psychological pressures stemming from social isolation, economic instability, and a lack of daily support. These households often experience significant mental stress, particularly as their living spaces, averaging 20–40 m², present challenges such as discomfort and inefficiency. Managing and recovering from mental and physical stress in such confined environments proves especially difficult. This study, therefore, seeks to address these challenges by applying the resistance stage of Hans Selye's "General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS)" theory to analyze the influence of spatial resilience on stress reduction and its correlations. The research aims to define how the attributes of the resistance stage mediate stress reduction and mental health improvement. Building on findings from the earlier study. This research proposes a case analysis model. It examines the micro-attributes of spatial resilience, specifically self-care and self-regulation, to establish their importance in mitigating stress. (Method) First, a theoretical review and literature analysis on stress, spatial resilience, self-care, and self-regulation in single-person households were conducted to formulate hypotheses and research models. Second, survey questions with a reliability score of α ≥ 0.7 were extracted from prior studies for a preliminary survey. Following reliability verification, the main survey was administered. Third, the collected data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 and PROCESS macro to perform a parallel multiple mediation analysis with control variables. Finally, demographic characteristics exceeding 30% were set as moderating variables, and linear graphs and logistic regression models were derived to propose effective design solutions for reducing stress in single-person households. (Results) The analysis revealed that the independent variable, X (stress in single-person households), had a significant negative impact on the dependent variable, Y (spatial resilience) (β = -0.3048, p < 0.01). Additionally, the mediating variable, M1 (self-care), played a significant role between X and Y (β = 0.1788, p < 0.01). Higher stress levels activated self-care, thereby enhancing spatial resilience. However, the mediating variable, M2 (self-regulation), showed no statistically significant indirect effect on Y (β = 0.1261, p > 0.05). (Conclusions) This study confirms that increased stress in single-person households negatively affects spatial resilience, with self-care serving as a crucial mediating factor. While higher stress levels promote self-care, improving resilience, self-regulation was found to have no significant influence. Therefore, promoting self-care and incorporating resilience-enhancing spatial design strategies are essential for managing stress in single-person households, improving their quality of living spaces, and contributing to better mental health outcomes.
