Abstract
Objectives: This study investigates the level of subjective well-being of single-person households by gender and examines the relationships between stress as well as other factors and well-being. Methods: For this aim, an online survey of 500 single-person households was conducted, and correlation and regression analyses were performed. Results: Stress and other factors exhibiting significant correlations are different by gender. Results of regression analysis show that both female and male single-person households share some common aspects in terms of their stress, while there exist noticeable gender differences, as well. For males, interpersonal stress is positive and significant, and stress from sexual needs is negative and significant. For females, stress from maintaining daily life and feeling unsafe decreases the level of overall well-being. Conclusions: The findings can be used in the field of counseling to enhance our understanding of male and female single-person households’ characteristics, and to further add to the empirical evidence for evidence-based practices in counseling.
