The study aims to present a principle and procedure of designing intermediateⅠspeaking textbook focused on communicative functions in concrete contexts of everyday life and to show how to manage a speaking class using that book. For this end, topics and functions of speaking tasks in various language textbooks are investigated and analyzed. Based on these investigations and focused on the intermediate learners' speaking proficiency level, proper topics and communicative functions are chosen. The characteristics of the intermediate speaking textbook are as follows. Speaking tasks are consisted of speaking activities having discourses in concrete contexts of communicative functions. To help and facilitate learners' communicative competence, usages and expressions appropriate for the occasion are presented before the tasks. To help teachers for class management, the book has a teachers' guide and it includes a teacher's checklist of speaking tasks that helps teachers to evaluate and give feedback of learners' speaking.
