This study set out to clarify the characteristics of the counter-arguments used by Korean language learners in the interactive context of debates, and to make an educational proposal for their teaching. To this end, we examined the counter-arguments used by debaters in a sequence by sequence manner and from the perspective of interactive and non-interactive counter-arguments, by applying conversation analysis. “Non-interactive counterargument” refers to an argumentative turn established by the debater through lexical choices and turn design within a counter-argumentative turn unit. “Interactive counterargument” is used to describe opposing sequences in more than two consecutive turns by the other speaker.
