Abstract

This study investigated teachers’ perception of economically disadvantaged gifted students. 177 teachers participated in the survey of the relationship between giftedness and the environment, characteristics of economically disadvantaged gifted students, identification and specific educational programs for these gifted students, and their own capacity to identify and teach them. The participants believed that giftedness could die out without educational support and that the identification of a gifted student might be more affected by parental social-economic status than by gender, culture or race. They gave the lowest point (2.08) to show the belief that giftedness could not be developed through only the students’ individual endeavor, suggesting that environmental support played a key role in nurturing giftedness. They thought the appropriate factors to identify disadvantaged gifted students were creativity, task-commitment, cognitive ability, leadership, and self-esteem, in this order such that leadership and self-esteem were the weakest indicators. They regarded cognitive disparity caused by deficient family environment as the reason for underrepresentation of these students rather than improper identification methods and unsuitable school cultures or systems. The teachers found it more difficult to understand gifted students from low income families than other students. Teachers without any educational experience in dealing with gifted students (economically disadvantaged or not) faced more difficulties than those with relevant experience. The study shows that programs for gifted low income students are required for their social and emotional developments.
