Abstract
It is urgently required to develop a proper identification tool to reduce the underrepresentation of economically disadvantaged students in gifted education. This study analyzed 19 tools for identifying gifted students from disadvantaged families in foreign countries and tried to find out their types and common factors to develop an identification tool for these students. The frequent factors were creativity, interests, problem solving ability, writing ability, academic aptitude, reading ability, visual expression, and learning speed etc. in order. Four tools were non-verbal with analogical ability. Creativity and problem solving ability regarded as non parental influence factors were considered to be proper for identification of disadvantaged gifted students. Traditional factors such as memory and school achievement used in traditional identification processes, were also used for identifying disadvantaged gifted students, because of their familiarity and convenience. Learning speed took an important role because it measured students’ competency and the degree of improvement. Checklists were the most frequently used type because of its easiness. To support the reliability and the validity of teachers’ evaluation, some tools provided rubrics and homeogenous items. Giftedness is considered not as a crystallized but as a fluid ability so that there is a tendency to identify gifted students from economically disadvantaged families in domain-general rather than in domain-specific perspective which is regarded to be influenced more by environmental factors.
