Abstract
This study aimed to explore the realities of play-oriented early childhood music education by analyzing teachers’ patterns of play support and children’ s musical experiences. An action research design was employed, involving five homeroom teachers and their classes in daycare centers and kindergartens. Data were collected over 8 to 12 weeks of music play sessions through observation records, teacher reflection journals, interviews, videos, and photographs. The results indicated that, during music play activities, participating teachers diversified children’s musical experiences through interaction, media, space, daily routines, modeling, and emotional support, and facilitated children’s spontaneous musical exploration by acting as environmental organizers and co-participants. In addition, through verbal feedback and emotional encouragement, teachers supported the expansion of children’s music play and transformed their own perceptions and attitudes toward music education. During music play activities, children recognized a variety of sounds, expressed their feelings, and shared musical experiences with others through creative performance and composition as well as through understanding musical symbols and contexts. Furthermore, children extended their musical experiences to play and learning in other domains. These findings demonstrate that children’s musical experiences are qualitatively deepened through teachers’ sensitive play support and interactions, and suggest that play-oriented early childhood music education can serve as a context for integrated education.
