Abstract

This study aims to examine the formulation of byeollye (modified rituals) across the “Four Rites” (Capping, Marriage, Mourning, and Sacrifice) and the perception of cheobyeon (coping with situational changes) by Geunjae Park Yun-won (1734–1799), a pivotal figure in 18th-century Nak-ron ritual studies, based on his ritual text Geunjae-seonsaeng-yeseol. The 18th-century Joseon society was a period of active discourse on modified rituals intended to bridge the gap between daily ritual practice and realistic constraints. While inheriting the orthodox tradition of the Giho School of ritual studies, Geunjae maintained a practical stance of harmonizing gyeong (canonical principles) and gwon (contextual exigency). The primary analytical findings of this paper are as follows. First, in Gwanbyeollye (Modified Capping Rites), Geunjae exhibited flexibility by allowing capping rituals even during mourning periods, recognizing the practical necessity for individuals to fulfill their duties as adults. Second, in Honbyeollye (Modified Marriage Rites), he proposed rational solutions that considered the bride’s livelihood—such as the return of wedding gifts upon the groom’s death—while strictly criticizing improper temporal customs (sisok) like erroneous pyebaek practices or remarriage during the mourning period for a deceased wife. Third, in Sangbyeollye (Modified Mourning Rites), he sought a compromise between human emotion (injeong) and ritual law, establishing specific protocols for mourning dress standards upon late notification of death and procedures for overlapping mourning (byeongyusang). Fourth, in Jebyeollye (Modified Sacrificial Rites), he emphasized the essence of the ceremony—purity and sincerity—maintaining the principle that suspending a rite is more consistent with its original intent if cleanliness cannot be ensured due to domestic constraints or lack of manpower. In conclusion, Geunjae Park Yun-won’s formulation of modified rituals transcends mere textual adherence, focusing on the “practical implementation of rituals considering both human emotion and realistic circumstances.” This holds significant importance in the history of ritual studies as a scholarly effort to re-establish the Confucian ritual order amidst the ideological crises of the late 18th century, such as the rise of Western Learning (Seohak), thereby ensuring the continued vitality of social norms.
