Abstract
Focusing on Hŏ Kyun’s two works, 'Sangwŏngunwangch'onggi' and 'Sungunbugunch'ŏnggi', this study explores the interpretive direction of these pieces regarding the reasons why he incorporated supernatural tales (sinidam) into formal prose genres. Around the turn of the 17th century, it was rare for supernatural tales to be included in the formal literary collections (munjip) of the literati, as such stories were typically confined to p'ilgi or chapnok. Nevertheless, the manifestation of the divine is presented as a central event in these two works. Given this context, it can be hypothesized that these works were composed with a certain intended effect in mind—one that the author sought to achieve even at the cost of defying the conventional practices of munjip compilation. This research interprets this choice of the author as a speech act to address contemporary political issues and the author’s own predicament. “Sangwŏnkun Wangch'onggi” advocates a modest mode of royal funerary practice by invoking an ancient tomb and emphasizing “observing ritual propriety” (kor: ye; Ch: li 禮), in sharp contrast to the elaborate rituals surrounding King Sŏnjo’s funeral. This position aligns with early seventeenth-century bureaucratic tendencies to constrain royal authority through ritual discourse. In “Sungun bukun ch'ŏnggi,” Hŏ Kyun frames his personal sense of injustice as a broader institutional problem. The conclusion’s account of the Sungunbu’s history, though seemingly neutral, implies that the office’s founding purpose had been distorted when it was reorganized into the Ŭigŭmbu. Read alongside the story of the young woman who becomes a spiritual guardian of the institution after her death, the work criticizes the malfunctioning of the penal and judicial systems. In both texts, the supernatural functions as an indirect mode of expressing views on sensitive contemporary issues that could not be stated openly.
