Abstract
This study aims to elucidate the characteristics and significance of the Dao-Wen Theory (道文論) established by Park Yunwon (朴胤源, 1734–1799), a leading Neo-Confucian scholar of the eighteenth-century Nakron lineage. The paper examines the process by which Park formulated the relationship between the Way (Dao, 道) and Literature (Wen, 文), the core features of his theoretical framework, its practical manifestations in his writing and literary criticism, and its subsequent transmission and development by later scholars. Park Yunwon systematized his doctrine in the wake of his debate with Yu Hanjun(俞漢雋), adopting the Li-Qi (理氣) paradigm by pairing Dao with Li and Wen with Qi. This endeavor is significant because it extended the philosophical framework of Zhu Xi’s Neo-Confucianism into literary theory, thereby articulating the ontological status of Wen within a coherent structure. This approach transcended the mere normative commitment to “prioritizing the Way over literary ornament” (Dao as root and Wen as branch). His doctrine was profoundly reflected in his writing: the stylistic contrast between his early and later works is pronounced. Rejecting ornate rhetoric and fictional embellishment, he pursued prose that conformed to Principle (Li), and in literary criticism, he privileged moral-philosophical implications above all else. Consequently, his writings achieved anaesthetic consonant with his philosophical convictions—characterized by the dominance of Principle and a succinct, archaic style (簡古). Park’s ideas were received and further elaborated by later scholars. In particular, OHuisang (吳熙常) explicitly adopted Park’s Dao-Li/Wen-Qi framework, while deepening the ontological analysis of Wen by grounding its multi-layered structure in Neo-Confucian interpretations of Mind (Xin, 心) and Temperament (Qizhi, 氣質). Although Park Yunwon’s doctrine exhibits the limitations of a conservative Unity-of-Dao-and-Wen position that restricts the autonomy of literature from a Neo-Confucian moralist standpoint, its significance lies in three areas: his systematic application of Neo-Confucian metaphysics to literary theory, his lifelong commitment to embodying this doctrine in practice, and its subsequent transmission and development across scholarly generations.
