소설 텍스트 수정이 읽기 이해에 미치는 영향 - 박태원의 『소설가 구보 씨의 일일』을 중심으로 -

초록

본 연구는 수정된 소설 텍스트가 한국어 중·고급 학습자의 읽기 이해에 미치는 영향을 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 문학 텍스트는 외국어 학습에 있어 중요한 자원이나 언어적·문화적 복잡성 때문에 학습자에게 어려움을 줄 수 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 수정된 소설 텍스트가 학습자들의 어려움 해소에 도움이 되는지를 확인하고자 박태원의 『소설가 구보 씨의 일일』의 원작과 황혜란, 윤새롬(2022)에서 텍스트 점유율이 조정된 수정본에 대한 읽기 이해 평가를 진행하였다. 황혜란, 윤새롬(2022)의 수정본은 학습자들이 이해하기 어려운 저빈도어를 고빈도어로 수정하여 텍스트 점유율을 95%로 조정한 것이다. 이에 대한 읽기 평가는 원작과 수정본에서 발췌한 텍스트의 종합적 이해, 세부적 이해, 추론적 이해를 측정하는 문항들로 구성되었다. 연구 결과, 수정된 소설 텍스트는 학습자의 읽기 이해도 향상에 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다(t=-3.286, p<.01). 특히 종합적-중심 내용/주제 이해 문항에서 수정의 효과가 두드러졌으며, 중상위권 집단 학습자에게서 더욱 뚜렷한 성과가 나타났다. 이는 중상위권 집단의 학습자들이 이미 보유하고 있는 한국어 능력과 언어적, 문화적 이해 능력의 차이에서 기인한 것으로 보인다. 반면, 추론적 이해 문항의 점수 변화가 가장 미미한 것은 단순한 언어적 수정만으로는 학습자 개인이 가지고 있는 읽기 전략에 도움을 주지 못했을 가능성이 있기 때문이다. 또한 추가적인 의미 맥락을 제공하는 텍스트 상세화와 달리 본 연구에서는 어려운 단어를 쉬운 단어로 교체하는 텍스트 단순화를 중심으로 대부분의 수정이 이루어졌다는 점도 결과에 영향을 미쳤을 수 있다. 본 연구는 이와 같은 결과를 통하여 소설 텍스트 수정이 한국어 교육에서 효과적으로 활용될 수 있음을 확인하였으며, 향후 한국어 교육에서 문학 교육의 방향성에 대한 시사점을 제시하였다.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the impact of modifying novel texts on the reading comprehension of Korean language learners. The study involved 108 intermediate to advanced learners enrolled in a liberal arts Korean language course at a university in Seoul. The target text was The Day of a Novelist Gubo by Park Taewon, which was modified to achieve a 95% text coverage level suitable for intermediate to advanced learners, based on the study by Hwang Hyeran and Yoon Saerom(2022). The reading comprehension assessment consisted of excerpts from both the original and modified texts and included questions designed to measure global understanding, detailed comprehension, and inferential comprehension. Two types of evaluation sheets were randomly distributed to participants, each alternating between the original and modified texts for comparison. The responses were analyzed using SPSS, and the scores were compared based on question types. The results indicated that the modified text had a significant positive effect on learners’ reading comprehension, especially in questions related to general understanding and for higher-intermediate learners. However, no significant differences were observed in inferential comprehension questions. This study highlights the importance of adjusting the difficulty of novel texts in Korean language education to improve learners’ comprehension and suggests effective strategies for text modification. However, as The Day of a Novelist Gubo reflects a specific era and cultural context, there may be limitations in generalizing these findings to other novel texts.
