Abstract
This study examines the significance of extensive reading as an instructional approach in Korean language education, focusing on the critical issues and considerations regarding the reading text development by level. Drawing on previous research, the study analyzes factors such as surface-level difficulty, lexical and grammatical complexity, syntactic challenges, as well as thematic and genre-based elements. The study critiques the prevalent practice of quantifying surface difficulty through metrics such as sentence and word counts, arguing for a reevaluation of the validity of these measures, particularly in terms of their influence on learners' subjective perceptions of text difficulty. Lexical and grammatical complexity, commonly assessed through frequency and distribution indices, are highlighted as fundamental linguistic components in reading instruction. However, this study identifies significant limitations in the existing vocabulary and grammar lists used in Korean language education curricula. It advocates for the expansion of grading systems to incorporate collocations, idiomatic expressions, and culturally specific vocabulary. Moreover, the study emphasizes the need to account for syntactic complexity, suggesting that greater attention be paid to genre and stylistic features in the design of reading materials. Lastly, the paper stresses the importance of incorporating a diverse range of themes and genres in reading materials, particularly to enhance reading fluency and engagement in extensive reading contexts. By addressing these multifaceted factors, the study lays a theoretical groundwork for the development of future leveled reading texts and offers insights into overcoming key challenges in managing text difficulty.
