한국어 읽기 교육에서 문학 텍스트 활용 방안 연구

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine an effective educational method for reading Korean as a foreign language through literary texts. If the ultimate goal of teaching Korean as a foreign language is to speak Korean as fluently as Korean people, the development of systemized teaching and learning principles that can help learners to foster their reading skills and even to understand the literary elements of the text is required instead of simply sticking to functional reading education. In this study, a survey was conducted on foreign students who were studying in Korean colleges and graduate schools to find out their needs, and a teaching method for reading was mapped out after literary works were selected. As foreign students who study in our country have to learn Korean for the purpose of college education, not merely for communication, the kind of Korean language education that involves cultural understanding is necessary for them to foster advanced Korean skills. Therefore literary texts that are of linguistic, literary and cultural value should be selected as reading materials. Specifically, the kind of works that cover the elements of Korean culture that are also found in other cultures should be utilized. An example is works that deal with a homoeopathic magic motif. A homoeopathic magic motif is concerned with consciousness that one can achieve something by imitating it. As J. G. Frazer explained in his book “The Golden Bough,” this motif is commonly found in countries that have different cultures and are far away from one another. Works that deal with this motif make it possible to take a literary approach during reading by indirectly describing their themes or what the characters wish. At the same time, these works make readers feel a sense of kinship or friendly toward the target culture. Accordingly, these works are expected to be of use for language education, literary education and cultural education. In a word, reading education through literary texts are expected to facilitate the vocabulary development of learners and their understanding and appreciation of literary symbolicity and folk culture.
