Abstract

William Blake’s poem “Auguries of Innocence” has long been eclipsed by readings that confine it to the narrow frameworks of Romanticism or mysticism. In more recent criticism, however, the poem has been re-situated within literary history as an act of écriture—an writing as praxis. Through ordinary objects and landscapes, the poem reveal thinking image that uncovers philosophical truth; its visionary imagination, perceiving the infinite in the infinitesimal, reconfigures cognitive orders and enacts an aesthetic politics that compels renewed vision amid the violence and repression of the real. When Blake’s poetry was first translated and introduced into colonial Korea in the 1920s, it was the poet Jeong Ji-yong, who had studied Blake while in Japan, that inscribed Blake symbolically into the literary field. Jeong’s poem “Pomegranate” both sublimates and reappropriates “Auguries of Innocence”, while simultaneously revealing influences from contemporary movements by Korean artists such as “thousand years of Silla”—a collective aesthetic and unconscious pursuit of Korean identity. In Jeong’s poetic consciousness, Blake’s visionary inheritance and the return to one of his own cultural identities coexist, not as contradictions but as concurrent causal layers. This duality suggests what may be termed 'over-determined origins of influence': the simultaneity of mediated, experiential influence through texts and the unconscious residues reverberating from the search for own identity. From this emerges the notion of 'recursive influence'—a dynamic process in which a poet (A), influenced by another (B), rediscovers and reconstitutes within himself (A′) the latent remains of his own identity. This structure of recursive and overdetermined influence reappears in the postwar Korean poems by Yun Gon-gang, Kim Hyun-seung, Ku Sang, and Cho Ji-hoon, whose diction—a clove of garlic, a wild flower, an apple, a grain of sand, a pomegranate blossom —embodies the reappropriated echoes of Blakean imagery. Although these works were once dismissed as “ahistorical” or “apolitical” on the grounds of their pure, traditional, or national diction, a closer reading reveals otherwise. When examined through the lens of Blake’s visionary thinking images and their affective, recursive resonance in the poetic subject, these texts disclose a latent performativity of anti-social écriture—a subversive writing practice that dismantles the symbolic order and reactive structures governing language, thought, and reality.
