Abstract

Hwayangji(華陽誌) was compiled by Damgok, Song Ju-sang(宋周相;1695~1751) in 1747 and is a general source book registered various materials about Hwayangdong concerning Uam, Song Si-yeol(宋時烈;1607~1689). The Hwayangji that has been conveyed to date is generally divided into a manuscript book and a printed book. First, there is an original draft-first written by Song Ju-sang on the purpose of complying Hwayangji of drafts in Hwayangji as a manuscript book. Also, there is an original manuscript made of revising it. Second, there are two kinds in Hwayangji as a printed book. One of them is the first printed book, Hwayangji printed an original manuscript complied by Song Ju-sang in 1747, as a block book made of two books in two volumes in 1853, and the other is a revised and enlarged book, Hwayangji printed as a block book, two books in six volumes(or three books in six volumes) which were made by Song Dal-su(宋達洙)ㆍ Song Geun-su(宋近洙)ㆍSong Byeong-gi(宋秉琦)'s revising the printed book in 1861. There are three things-the fact in the mountains(山中事實), Myowonsajeok(廟院事蹟), and Chongrondaeui(總論大義)- to which Song Ju-sang paid his great concern, while compiling Hwayangji. The fact in the mountains is to collect the writings concerning the beginning writings and the last ones about the history of geographical name of Hwayandong, Hwayanggukok(華陽九曲) known for popular location in Hwayandong, and Biryebudong's (非禮不動)Aegak(writings etched on the rocks). Myowonsajeok is to collect the writings concerning Mandongmyo(萬東廟), and Hwayang Seowon(華陽書院). Chongrondaeui is to collect some writings-'Gichukbongsa(己丑封事)' and 'Jeongyubonsa(丁酉封事)'-intensively appearing of 'the thoughts of Jonjuyangi(尊周攘夷). We know that Hwayangji has been transmitted and printed through the process from the original draft to the first manuscript, the first printed book, and the revised and enlarged book, when we judge it on the basis of the data remaining to date. Hwayangji has a value as a general source book collecting various registrations and materials about Hwayang Seowon, Mandongmyo, and Song Si-yeol. And it is a source book that is strongly emphasized on the try to succeed Uam's 'thoughts of respecting Ju country(尊周思想).' All data registered in Hwayangji have the meaning of Jonju(尊周) or Jonmyeong(尊明) whether Uam directly wrote them or other people did them. As the above facts, it was about one hundred years since the first printed book of Hwayangji was printed, after Song Jusang complied it in 1747. In addition, it has values as the general data succeeding Uam and his thoughts and as the achievement printing the revised and enlarged book by his descendants in 1861. In particular, the scholar's thoughts('Jonjuyangi') that had succeeded Uam and his thoughts were symbolized as Mandongmyo, and Hwayang Seowon. Also, it is judged that Song ju-sang's Hwayangji acted as a mediator that compiled Seong Hae-eung(成海應)'s Hwayandongji(華陽洞志) since Hwayangji had an influence on compiling Yeon Gyeongjae, Seong Haeeung's Hwayandongji.
