Abstract

The 1920s and 1930s was a period during which the discourse on the improvement of traditional lifestyles in various aspects, such as clothing, food, and housing, became increasingly prominent in colonial Korean society. This period marked the emergence of discussions on the need to improve traditional ways of life, which was actively formed through the writings of the new generation of intellectuals. These new intellectuals sought to promote changes in perception, with the goal of enlightenment, in order to align daily life with modern, idealized lifestyles that fit the turn of the twentieth century. These discussions considered multiple aspects such as aesthetics, hygiene, practicality, and economics. Notably, during this period, discourses related to lifestyle improvements, shaped by Western modernism and functionalism Japanese intellectuals promoted was introduced into colonial Korea in various forms. Newspapers and women’s and enlightenment magazines, which were actively published in Seoul, became central platforms for intellectuals, especially first-generation Korean architects and humanist scholars who were indirectly influenced by Western rationalism, to disseminate and publicize diverse ideas for Western-style modern lifestyle and housing improvement. These intellectuals played a crucial role in bringing these limited Western ideas on modern living and housing to the wider public debate in Korean society. Therefore, this paper will focus on examining the media discourse surrounding the improvement of traditional housing in colonial Korea during the 1920s and 1930s from the perspectives of hygiene and functionality. To this end, the paper will explore the four types of “healthy housing” proposed by Kim Yun-gi, a representative first-generation Korean architect, in his series of articles, titled Housing Problems, published in the Gajeong Buin (Housewife) section of Dong-A Ilbo from September 27 to October 11, 1930. Through these serial articles, Kim emphasizes both the structural and functional aspects of housing, as well as its hygienic and psychological dimensions. The integration of these two perspectives through a “compromised” viewpoint, representative of the first generation of modern Korean architects, holds significant importance in the context of analyzing the development of modern architecture in Korea during the Japanese colonial period.
