Abstract
This paper seeks to explore how Koreans today perceive and read their modern cultural heritage which now came to fall into its de-facto raison d’être being contested for its historical links to Japan’s colonial rule over Korea. It looks particularly into this aspect from the perspective of the sociocultural ways in which collective memories are formed or constructed vis-à-vis the mnemonic dynamics of cultural policy. It juxtaposes today’s ordinary Koreans having more diversified attitudes and views towards it with their government’s hitherto controversial decisions made on the preservation or demolition of some of ex-colonial public buildings in postcolonial Korean cities, designed by western-educated or influenced Japanese architects. Specifically, it concerns how imaginatively Japan’s colonial primate cities, i.e., Seoul and Busan, were refashioned by Meiji Japan (1868-1912)-hired European architects and their Japanese collaborators at the turn of the twentieth century. This study therefore strives to deliberate over how negative or historically stigmatised architectural heritage still disputed in postcolonial nations the world over are to be managed and preserved. And I argue that it is the extensive use of standard design enabled via common architectural plans of Japanese architects or architectural engineers-designed official buildings in colonial Korea that fed into the architecturally-imagined pseudo-Westernisation/Europeanisation of its overall urban and social-scapes.
