Abstract

This study began with the question of ‘Why do Koreans lose in negotiations?’ Through dramas, the current negotiation style of Korea, which has become the 10th most advanced country in the world’s economic ranking, was indirectly confirmed. Accordingly, the negotiation style between Korea and Japan was analyzed and compared using the recently aired TV drama <Technology of Negotiation> as the analysis data. For analysis, the discourse negotiation stage was divided into four stages: exploration stage, strategy execution stage, agreement stage, and negotiation stage, and the discourse up to the agreement stage was analyzed. As a result, in the search stage, only Gyeongseong negotiation style appeared in Korea, and in the case of Japan, various negotiation styles of Gyeongseong, ductility, and principle appeared. In the strategic execution stage, only Gyeongseong negotiation style was observed in both Korea and Japan, but it seems to be a state of tension in negotiations. Finally, in the agreement stage, both sides showed that they changed to a soft negotiation style. It was confirmed that the Korean negotiation style preferred direct and quick communication, while the Japanese negotiation style preferred an indirect and careful method. As seen in previous studies, this result did not show a significant change. Still, Korea tends to hurry, stick to the results, and produce results. In the case of Japan, it can be seen that it is not in a hurry, checking according to the principles, and taking an attitude of carefully proceeding with the work.
