Abstract

This study examined the use of politeness strategies in Japanese and Korean dramas based on Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory. By comparing their usage patterns, this study highlighted similarities and differences in the portrayal of politeness strategies in the dramas of the two countries. These findings indicate that negative politeness strategies are most frequently used in both Japanese and Korean dramas. Honorifics, polite expressions, hedging, and apologies are commonly observed. This suggests that these strategies play a crucial role in facilitating smooth communication in both cultures. Regarding positive politeness strategies, Japanese dramas tend to focus on fulfilling the listener’s need for approval, whereas Korean dramas frequently use expressions that actively engage the listener in conversations. On-record strategies appear at nearly the same rate in both Japanese and Korean dramas. However, their overall frequency is low, indicating that direct commands are not commonly used in the dramas of either country. Regarding off-record strategies, Japanese dramas often rely on exaggerated expressions, where Korean dramas frequently incorporate hints and rhetorical questions to prompt action. These findings contribute to a better understanding of communication styles in Japanese and Korean contexts. This, in turn, may help minimize misunderstandings and friction in cross-cultural communication, facilitating smoother interactions between Japan and Korea. Future research should examine differences in politeness strategies based on factors such as age, gender, and region. A more comprehensive analysis could compare politeness strategies across different situational contexts and apply politeness theory to other media such as films and spoken language corpora.
