Abstract

The stories have traditionally been considered an unique characteristic of narrative literature, but stories are commonly observed even in poetry. This paper aims to describe and compare the methodology of story in poetry and novels, focusing on how poetry develops its stories. If the novel creates a plot through causal actions, poetry introduces a story through affective causality. This phenomenon arises from the principle that each element in poetry is not hierarchically arranged but placed under the principle of mutual resonance. If the novel use act as the unit to construct story, poetry creates story through world-image, which are images that present the reality of the world to the subject. Therefore, in poetry can be recognized as a significant element that incorporates the historical essence of the world into the poem. If novel represents literature in the past tense, poetry represents literature in the present tense and the realm of the infinitive. While plot in the novel can be explained in terms of possibility-reality, poetry can be explained in terms of virtuality-actuality
