Abstract

This paper presents an investigation into the storytelling styles of poetrypicture books in which poetry, as language art, performs the role of the text. The study looks into the process a poem would undergo when reorganizedaccording to the medium of the picture book and examines how its meaningwould be supplemented and expanded through its relationship to pictures insuch a case. The lines and stanzas of the original text become divided according to thescenes by which the illustrator interprets them. From the perspective of readingpoetry, this can be seen as an element that hinders immersion in the text. However, the pictures supplement and expand the original text’s meaning as thenarrative space created in the fragmentation process is filled with pictures. But when the imagery of the poem overlaps with pictures in the process,the poetic imagination cannot be broadened. Contrary to the commonassumption that poems strongly characterized by narrative seem moreappropriate for poetry picture books, it is noteworthy that it is actually whenthe poem is characterized by a weak narrative that the illustrator assumes thebigger role and gains more space to interpret a poem actively. Text selectionthus makes a very important element in making a poetry picture book.
