変貌する厳島神 －古代ㆍ中世文芸を中心に－

本稿は、『類聚国史』ㆍ『三代実録』ㆍ『延喜式』ㆍ『八幡愚童訓』(甲)ㆍ覚一本『平家物語』ㆍ長門本『平家物語』ㆍ『源平盛衰記』など、古代ㆍ中世文芸に現れている厳島神を究明することにより、厳島神がどのように変貌していくか、という厳島神の変貌様相について考察したものである。 古代文芸において安芸国一宮としての神威を現していた厳島神は、中世文芸『平家物語』以外の文芸テクストでは、軍神ㆍ観音ㆍ大日如来の本地としてその神威を呈している。また、『平家物語』諸本のテクスト、即ち、『源平盛衰記』では大日如来の本地として、また、長門本『平家物語』においては、旅の神ㆍ仏法興行の主ㆍ慈悲第一の明神ㆍ極楽往生ㆍ所願成就を約束する神としての神格を現している。そして、覚一本『平家物語』においては、軍神ㆍ娑羯羅竜王の第三の姫宮ㆍ胎蔵界の垂迹ㆍ皇子誕生祈願の神ㆍ平氏の氏神ㆍ天下安泰ㆍ病気平癒の神ㆍ三明六通の霊神としての神威を現しており、時代とともにそのぞれのテクストの中で次第に変貌していくことが分かる。 厳島神は、『平家物語』以外の文芸テクストㆍ『平家物語』諸本のテクストにおいて、共通に軍神ㆍ大日如来の本地としての神格を現しているが、『平家物語』諸本テクストにおいては旅の神から三明六通の霊神に至るまで、その機能と変容の様相がより複雑化されていることが窺える。 信仰対象としての神々が、信仰主体の側の意識や社会状況の変化に応じて性格を徐々に変えてゆくことは、民俗宗教史の常識であると言われているが、このような厳島神の実に多様な変貌は、例えば、胎蔵界の垂迹ㆍ仏法興行の主ㆍ観音ㆍ大日如来の本地ㆍ極楽往生ㆍ三明六通の霊神など、佛教ㆍ密教を交えた形態として霊魂の救済や現世ㆍ後世の利益などを求めつつ、当時厳島神に対する人々の要求や願望を如実に示していると言えよう。
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the aspects of tranforming Itsukushima-god(厳島神)" by focusing on the Literary Arts in AncientㆍMedieval Japan. Itsukushima-god who showed the local deity god of the Aki country(安芸国) first, and it appeared as god of the military ㆍ Honji (their real form in Buddhism) of Kannon(観音)ㆍHonji of Dainichi Nyorai(Mahavairocana) in the Literary Arts except “The Heike Monogatari(平家物語)”in the Middle Ages. Itsukushima-god showed Honji of Dainichi Nyorai(Mahavairocana) in “Genpei Jōsuiki(源平盛衰記)”, and it also appeared as god of tripㆍthe master who spread Buddhismㆍgod of the mercy firstㆍrebirth in paradise(極楽往生)ㆍgod who promises the wish accomplishment in Nagato’s Book(長門本) “The Tale of the Heike”. And it also showed god of the militaryㆍthe third princess of Shyakatsura dragonlord(娑羯羅竜王)ㆍ manifested form of the Womb World(胎蔵界)ㆍgod of the prince birth prayerㆍthe patron saint(氏神) of Heike(平家) clanㆍgod of the world peace and security and the disease recoveryㆍgod of Sanmyo Rokutsu(Deity of six three wisdoms of Buddha) in Kakuichi`s Book(覚一本) “The Tale of the Heike”. It is common sense of the folk hierology that gods as the faith object gradually change the character depending on the consciousness by the faith main constituent and a social turn of events. But there are the really various changes of such Itsukushima-god as for manifested form of the Womb Worldㆍthe master who spread BuddhismㆍHonji (their real form in Buddhism) of KannonㆍDainichi Nyorai (Mahavairocana)ㆍrebirth in paradise god of Sanmyo Rokutsu(Deity of six three wisdoms of Buddha). It vividly show a demand and the desire of people for Itsukushima-god while demanding the relief of the soul or the profit in this world and coming ages as the form that it brought Buddhismㆍ esoteric Buddhism into.
