変貌する稲荷神 ―古代･中世文芸を中心に―

本稿は、『山城国風土記』･『延喜式』･『枕草子』･『蜻蛉日記』･『今昔物語集』･『更級日記』･『平治物語』･『愚管抄』･『吉野拾遺』･『廿二社本縁』･『稲荷大明神流記』など、古代･中世文芸に現れた稲荷神を究明することにより、稲荷神がどのように変貌していくか、という稲荷神の変貌様相について具体的に考察してみたものである。 古代文芸において稲荷神は、『山城国風土記』では農耕の神としてその神威を現していたが、『枕草子』においては七度詣での対象に、『蜻蛉日記』においては夫婦復縁祈願の対象に、『今昔物語集』においては男女の性愛祈願の対象と産神に、『更級日記』においては霊験あらたかな神に変貌している。 中世文芸においては、『平治物語』では熊野と一同に参詣する神に、『愚管抄』では庶民信仰の対象に、『吉野拾遺』では天皇を守護する神に、『廿二社本縁』では東寺を守護する神に、『稲荷大明神流記』では仏法を守護する神に、その神格を現している。即ち、農耕の神であった稲荷神は、平安時代以降、夫婦復縁祈願の対象や男女の性愛祈願の対象など、徐々に現世利益をもたらす神として貴族や庶民たちの信仰を集め、さらに密教と習合した後の中世では東寺や仏法を守護する神へと大きく変容していることが分かる。 それは、稲荷神が、平安時代から徐々に現世利益的な効能を期待され、恋愛や仕事をはじめ、願望成就など、身分の上下に関係なく日常生活に密接に関わっていた神であり、このような稲荷神の現世利益的な神格は、平安時代中期以降、貴族が競って修させた密教修法の諸尊の効能と共通性を持つものによると言われている。しかし、稲荷神の実に多様な変貌は、時代の変遷とともに密教と習合することにより、新たに獲得した様々な神格として、その時代の人々の要求や願望を反映する信仰の発露と言えよう。
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the aspects of tranforming Inari-god(稲荷神)" by focusing on the Literary Arts in Ancient･Medieval Japan. In ancient literary arts, Inari-god showed an agriculture gods in “Yamashiro no kuni Fudoki(山城国風土記)” , but it appeared as an object of the visiting Inari Shrine seven times in “Makura no Sōshi(The Pillow Book , 枕草子)”, an object of the couple reconciliation prayer in “Kagerō Nikki(蜻蛉日記)”, an object of the sexual love prayer of the man and woman･guardian deity of pregnant women, newborn babies and one’s birthplace in “Konjaku Monogatarishū(今昔物語集)”, an as god of miraculous powers in “Sarashina Nikki(更級日記)”. In the literary arts of the Middle Ages, Inari-god showed god to visit with Kumano(熊野) at the same time in “Heiji Monogatari(平治物語)”, a target of people’s belief in “Gukanshō(愚管抄)”, god to protect the Emperor in “Yoshino Shūi(吉野拾遺)”, god to protect To-ji Temple(東寺) in “Nijyunisha Honen(廿二社本縁)”, god to protect Buddhism in “Inari Daimyojin Ruki(稲荷大明神流記)”. In other words, Inari-god as an agriculture gods gathers the faith of noble general public as god gradually brings benefits gained in this world through observance of the Inari Faith. After Heian era(平安時代) it was including an object of the couple reconciliation prayer or an object of the sexual love prayer of the man and woman and so on. And it also greatly transforms that god protecting To-ji Temple and Buddhism in the Middle Ages after having done syncretization of Shinto with esoteric Buddhism. Benefits gained in this world through observance of the Inari Faith is gradually expected from Heian era, and Inari-god is god concerned with everyday life regardless of top and bottom of the social position including the desire accomplishment commencing with love and work closely and so on. However, as for really a variety of changes of Inari-god, I conclude that it was an expression of the faith to reflect demands and desires of people in the time as various divinity that it acquired newly by doing syncretization of Shinto with esoteric Buddhism.
