Abstract
In Putonghua, one-syllable numerals are reduplicated in the AA form, and two-syllable numerals are reduplicated in the AAB, ABB, and AABB forms. In Chinese dialects, the infix-added form of one-syllable numerals and the ABAB form of two-syllable numerals are also observed. The reduplication of numeral units in both Putonghua and hinese dialects generally indicates approximate numbers. Specifically, in Putonghua, the reduplication of numeral units is used to emphasize that the quantity is large. In Chinese dialects, the infix-added form implies that the quantity of the unit is large. Reduplications of numerals, excluding numeral units in Putonghua, indicate that the object is evenly divided by the quantity indicated by the numeral. In dialects, the AA form is primarily used to indicate the order of birth among children, and the AAB form is commonly used to indicate approximate numbers. Additionally, the infix-added form conveys a tone of exaggeration, implying that the quantity is sufficient to exceed the speaker’s expectation. In this way, the infix-added form reflects the speaker’s subjective perception of quantity, whether it is the reduplication of numeral units or numerals excluding the numeral units.
