Abstract
This paper explores urban rewilding viewed as a new approach to urban greening in the age of the post- Natural world and Anthropocenic crises. Urban rewilding seeks to restore ecosystem functions and processes in post-industrial urban places, such as abandoned housing blocks, railways, and industrial facilities. Recently, it has gained increasing attention from urban planners and environmentalists as a nature-based solution to enhance urban biodiversity and provide new carbon sinks. This paper offers a critical review of urban rewilding both as an environmental policy and a form of urban ecology. It begins by introducing the concept, methods, advantages and challenges through several examples of urban rewilding. It then outlines several scholarly perspectives–including systems-based, urban political ecology, and posthuman approaches–which together offer a more critical and multifaceted analysis of the practice. The paper also identifies potential rewilding sites in Seoul and other cities, considering the applicability of urban rewilding in the South Korean context. Bringing together, it argues that urban rewilding is not simply a tool of the global Nature Positive agenda but an opportunity to reconfigure human-nature relations in the city toward more affirmative and collaborative ends. In doing so, it suggests that urban rewilding could serve as a form of environmentalism fit for the post-Natural World.
