Abstract
Urban greening initiatives have garnered increasing scholarly attention for their role in reshaping urban space, particularly through the lens of environmental gentrification. This phenomenon refers to the increase in nearby property values and the displacement of low-income residents following environmental improvements–a dynamic that has also been observed in South Korean cities. This study examines the concept of environmental gentrification and explores its relevance to Korean urban development. Drawing on the framework of urban political ecology, it shows how public greening policies, while framed in terms of sustainability, can also exacerbate social inequality. The study argues for an integrated approach that considers both policy-making and capital accumulation in state-led redevelopment efforts.
