Abstract
Since 2000, land-grabbing issues in Africa have been receiving increased attention. Most existing studies focus on analyzing the main actors which contributed to land-grabbing. Unfortunately, it is often the case that the communities’ perspectives are not fully analyzed. Accordingly, this quantitative study aims to analyze land-grabbing issue from the perspective of the community. By conducting in-depth interviews with Kaongozi community in Malawi, it endeavoured to discover points that may have been missing(or absent) in previous land-grabbing studies. This study finds that the biggest challenge the Kaongozi community faced since their displacement from the previous settlement(Matiki) was environmental change. Poor soil condition and rocky topography in Kaongozi changed how they identify themselves from ‘Matiki community’ to ‘poor people’. Further, the performance of their traditional dance such as Malipenga and Chioda has also ceased following their forced relocation. In other words, land-grabbing has also influenced the community’s culture. Additionally, the community did not identify a specific actor as the cause of their displacement but a combination of different actors. However, they did not appear to attach great importance to finding the actual land-grabber but rather to an individual or individuals that could provide compensation for the hardship they experienced. From this study it can be concluded that existing studies miss out on many important points as they ignored communities’ perspective on land-grabbing. And the key reason behind it is because researchers still tend to focus on at the time when the displacement occurred. This naturally makes them continue to focus on finding the land-grabber. It is time for researchers to move to the next phase of land-grabbing studies which is to focus on communities’ perspective. This will not only enrich the study but also can bring about new research topic by relating land-grabbing and loss of traditions and culture as found in this study.
