아리스토텔레스는 삼차원적으로 연장된 공간의 실재성을 부인하고 물체가 차지하고 있는 자리를 이차원적인 평면으로 축소시켜 파악하고 있다. 아리스토텔레스는 그와 같은 자신의 공간이론이 물체의 자리에 관한 일상적 이해로부터 논리적으로 일관성 있게 도출될 수 있다고 생각했다. 이 글에서 필자는 우선 아리스토텔레스가 염두에 둔 도출과정이 실제로 어떤 것이었는지 규명해볼 것이다. 그 다음 그와 같은 공간이론에 입각하여 물체의 공간운동을 설명하는 것이 어떤 난관에 봉착하는지 짚어볼 것이다. 그리고 그러한 난관을 극복하기 위해 아리스토텔레스로서는 어떤 시도를 할 수 있는지도 논의할 것이다. 물론 아리스토텔레스 자신도 그러한 시도를 한 것이 틀림없지만, 텍스트 전승의 상태 때문에 그 시도의 내용을 명확하게 읽어내는 것은 거의 불가능하다. 따라서 이 글에서는 아리스토텔레스의 시도를 복원하는 과제가 문제의 난관을 극복해 보고자 하는 시도들과 밀접히 연결되어 있음을 보일 것이다. 또한 어떤 것이 아리스토텔레스 철학의 노선에 가장 충실한 방안인지도 함께 모색하게 될 것이다.
Abstract
Aristotle’s contention that the place of physical bodies should be conceived rather as two-dimensional plane as three-dimensional space has been treated as one of the most quixotic curiosities in his philosophical teachings; it could not be heartily endorsed even by his peripatetic followers in the antiquity. However, it was Aristotle’s firm belief that the two-dimensionality of place is a necessary corollary drawn from the widely accepted ordinary endoxa about the place of physical bodies. In this paper I will try to illuminate the obscure content of argumentations which aristotle put forth to validate his conception of space. There are certainly some difficulties which Aristotle has to overcome while endeavoring to explain the locomotion of physical bodies on the basis of his conception of space. I will try also to show how one can evaluate properly his attempt to overcome these difficulties.
