Abstract
This article addresses two issues on Plato’s Sophist 252c~263d, which is regarded as the most difficult and controversial part of the dialogue. The first issue is concerned with the way in which the fact that the non-being is is established on the basis of the discussion of the mixture of the greatest kinds. In particular, this article explores what the sense of ‘einai’ under consideration throughout the discussion is. According to an influential interpretation, the so-called complete use of ‘einai’ does not play any role in the process and only the incomplete use is at work. Counter to this interpretation, this article suggests an alternative reading of the central passage of 256d11 ~ 256e7. On this reading, the passage is better understood as an extension of the complete use rather than as a continuous adoption of the incomplete use. The second issue this article addresses is concerned with how the analysis of the non-being as the different from the being applies to the later analysis of the false statement. In 236b9 the false statement is defined as the statement that says the things that are different from the things that are. On the surface, this looks to be a direct application of the analysis of the non-being established by the discussion of the mixture of the greatest kinds. But this definition, as it stands, has a very serious defect and many readings have been suggested to deal with this problem. Instead of directly addressing which of those readings is most plausible as representing Plato’s own thought, this article goes a little bit deeper and looks into the ultimate cause of the defect of the definition of the false statement. At the root of the problem lies Plato’s failure to realize that the analysis of the non-being as the different from the being established earlier cannot apply directly to the later analysis of the false statement. And this failure ultimately results from his ambitious plan to tackle Parmenides’ doctrine of the unutterability of the non-being and the puzzle of the possibility of the false statement at the same time and with the same conceptual tool.
