‘직선’의 존재론 —『영혼론』 403a10-16의 한 해석—

초록

『영혼론』 403a10-16의 해석을 둘러싸고 다양한 해석이 제기되었다. 대표적으로 Lear의 관점을 공유하는 학자들은 이 구절을 근거로 감각 대상이 기하학적 ‘완전성’을 그 자체로 구현하고 있다고 주장한다. 첫 번째 목적은 Lear의 해석과 그것으로부터 연유한 현대의 지배적인 해석을 논박하는 것이다. 해당 구절에 대한 정확한 독해는 아리스토텔레스 수학철학의 올바른 이해를 위해서 뿐만 아니라, 무엇보다 Lear의 해석 비판이라는 목적을 보다 효과적으로 달성하기 위해서도 필요한 작업이다. 두 번째 목적은 해당 구절이 제기하는 직선의 존재론적 위상 문제에 대한 새로운 해석상의 대안을 제시하는 것이다. 이러한 분석과 확장된 해석을 제안하면서 아리스토텔레스가 경우에 따라 기하학적 대상을 형상적 측면과 질료적 측면으로 분리하기도 한다는 사실을 주장할 것이다. 그리고 이때 두 측면으로의 분리는 여러 학자들이 주장하는 것처럼 ‘정의적’ 차원의 분리를 넘어서, 존재론적이고 ‘공간적인’ 차원의 분리임을 증명할 것이다. 이렇게 직선을 존재론적이고 공간적으로 사유할 때, 우리는 예전부터 연구자들을 괴롭혀 온 『영혼론』 1권 1장의 해석하기 어려운 구절을 이해할 수 있게 된다.

Abstract

There have been many different interpretations about De Anima 403a10-16. Among them some scholars following Lear claim that this paragraph shows sensible objects realize the geometrical ‘perfection’. First of all this paper will refute Lear’s interpretation and the recent dominant position following him. It is necessary to read this phrases exactly in order to understand Aristotle’s mathematical philosophy properly and refute Lear’s interpretation efficiently. Secondly this paper will present a new interpretation about the ontological status of straight line that this paragraph can show. And then by presenting this refutation and the extended interpretation, this paper will show that Aristotle separate geometrical objects into the ‘formal’ and the ‘material’ in some cases. And this separation will be proved to be ontological and ‘spacial’ separation over ‘definitional’ sepation. And this way of separation will make the one difficult paragraph in De Anima 1.1 to be understandable.
