Abstract
Aristotle's classification of sciences(epistemē) is given by 'epistemological' criteria, not by the 'ontological' criteria with respect of the object. The 'epistemological' distinction of an object can be made clear through the analysis of his method of 'abstraction'. Regarding the classification of sciences, his concept of abstraction works in the following way. The 'ontological' foundation of Aristotle's theoretical science is 'first substance (prōtē ousia)', and First Philosophy, Natural Science, and Mathematics are distinguished by 'from what point of view' they abstract the first substance. Aristotle uses the method of "abstraction" in several places in Metaphysics, Physics and so on. We abstract 'the first substance' or a sensible object by way of ‘in so far as(qua)’ several times, such as ‘in so far as it is movable’ or ‘in so far as it is qua sizable’. Through this article, I examined Aristotle's efforts to establish geometry as a science through the analysis of his theoretical writings. In particular, this article is an attempt to justify whether establishing geometry as a science is possible, and the essential features of geometrical objects are described as 'size' and 'extension', and particularly as 'extension'. Aristotle assumes 'extension' as a proper object of inquiry in geometry through the work of abstracting geometrical size. Geometry is a science that separates infinitely divisible continuous extension from sensible objects, and takes this extension as proper object.
