Abstract

This paper presents the criteria for distinguishing between body and non-body in Aristotle’s natural philosophy. A body (sōma) may be understood as having a three dimensional extension as a kind of magnitude (megethos), but the definition of this object poses some interpretational problems especially in understanding Aristotle’s natural philosophy. He deals extensively with the concept of ‘external extension’ as a third candidate for the place and ‘void’ as an independent receiver in Physics 4. These are things whose reality is denied even though they conform to the definition of a body as an extension with three dimensions. This paper aims at the understanding of the texts that are difficult to interpret from the place theory and void theory of his natural science. And through this, I confirm the definition of the ‘body’ as something that can be contacted and has heaviness or lightness, which has never been properly observed concerning his natural philosophy. And I note that this definition differs in some respects from the definition of body that has traditionally been accepted, and consider what advantages this may have.
