Abstract

The passage that is usually referred to in discussing the tripartition of theoretical philosophy is the Metaphysics E, 1026a8-20. Here, Aristotle divides the theoretical philosophy into theology, mathematics and physics according to two criteria, the mobility and the separability of the objects from the matter. This division, mutatis mutandis, had been adopted and widely disseminated through the Introduction to Philosophy of Greek Neoplatonists such as Ammonius, David and Elias. However, other Neoplatonists have not given their preference to this tripartition based on the book, like Boethius who in his first commentary on Porphyry’s Isagogè exposes another kind of theoretical philosophy. On the basis of older Greek exegetic materials, Boethius proposes a division according to three types of substances (substantiae/ousiai): the first one, intelligible, which is the object of theology; the second, a rational substance or soul, which does not have a corresponding discipline; and the third substance which is identified to the sensible realities, objects of the physics. The source of this strange division can be discovered through a comparative analysis with Dexippus’ Commentary on Aristotle's Categories, in which he exposes a similar system that probably comes from Porphyrys’ exegesis on the Metaphysics, book Lambda 1069a30-1069b3. Thus, these texts prove that, within the Neoplatonic school, existed two types of tripartition of theoretical philosophy which do not agree with each other on the status of mathematics. That’s why it seems to have existed a controversy, or even an attempt to harmonize these two systems respectively from the book E and Lambda. In fact, one can find the trace of such an attempt in Simplicius' Commentary on the Categories, where he shows a system that identifies the intermediate substance, that is the soul, with mathematics, an interpretation that he borrows, no doubt, from the exegesis of Jamblicus on Plato's Timaeus. In this context, this article aims to report the historical existence of the tripartition of theoretical philosophy based on the book Lamda, describe the particularity of each kind of division and show the way the aristotelian ousiai integrate the Neoplatonic system ordered in intelligible, souls and sensitive realities.
