Abstract

In Metaphysics Z 3, Aristotle examines the subject-criterion to be a substance : "Substance, it is that which is always subject." However, we find here a striking passage called "stripping off." This is an argument by abstraction, in which one takes a corporeal thing and strips off all its attributes and determinations, all its potentialities and even its three dimensions―length, breadth, and depth―, that are the constitutional physical conditions of a thing. But why Aristotle put such a thought experiment in the middle of the examination of the subject-criterion? I am going to get a clue to response this question by posing another question : "Whose theory it is, the argument by abstraction presented in the Metaphysics Z 3 ?" The traditional interpretations find a concept of prime matter, as the remnant of abstraction and the ultimate subject of predication. Having a viewpoint different from the traditional interpretation, I argue that in this passage there is no place for a notion like "prime matter" as a part of theory of Aristotle himself. In fact, he points out in the text that the conclusion of the argument by abstraction―"Only the matter becomes substance"― is going to those who consider the question in such a manner. So I think that, in this argument by abstraction in Metaphysics Z 3, Aristotle does not give his own theory of matter, but criticizes a certain concept of matter affirmed by other thinkers. I propose that the target of Aristotle's argument could be the "ultimate vehicle" or "chora" presented in the Timaeus of Plato.
