Abstract
This paper examines the context and meaning of the three harms (atychēma, hamartēma, adikēma) in Chapter 8 of Book 5 of Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics(EN). Although there is no mention of these terms in his ethical writings, a similar passage can be found in Rhetoric (1374b1-10). However, the explanations of the three harms in EN are more detailed than those in the Rhetoric, and the corresponding items to the three harms in question are unclear. Considering contextual background discussing the voluntary and involuntary, the five candidates for the three harms in EN 5.8 are assigned to either one of atychēma, hamartēma, and adikēma in the end. But different qualifications characterize each item even for the same category of harm. In order to understand Aristotle’s additional descriptions of the three harms, this study suggests two possible interpretations. One is to see it as a difference in the explanation: While the three harms in Rhetoric are a description of legal concepts, those in EN contain Aristotle’s own interpretation. The other is to see it as a difference in perspective: if the three harms in Rhetoric suggest a legal point of view, those in EN emphasize the moral point of view. In any case, this implies the diversity of Aristotle’s perspective of justice.
