Abstract
This paper examines Nicias’ speeches delivered in the so-called Sicilian debate in Thucydides’ History 6.9-24. The debate is important because it provides a first-hand account of how the decision to send the Sicilian expedition, arguably the most important event of the Peloponnesian War, was made among the Athenian demos. His speeches reveal many aspects of his character as the commander of the expedition, and it shows how those aspects were influenced by his judgment of demos. This article analyzes the speeches by focusing on three points. First, it explains the effect Thucydides has on his readers by foreshadowing Nicias’ internal state and the intentions of his speech. By foreshadowing his reluctance to assume command and his intentions to rescind his appointment, Thucydides makes the reader aware of the discrepancy between the inner motivations and the outer message of his speech. Second, I closely examine the content, sentence structure and recurring expressions of both speeches. The style and rhetoric of Nicias’ speeches are consistent with Thucydides' characterization of him. Without revealing his intentions, Nicias tries to sway the Athenians in the direction he wants them to go with a variety of plausible reasons, but his speech produces the opposite effect of his intentions. Third, I will examine the ways in which Nicias' speeches reflect Thucydides’ judgment about the reasons for the failure of the Sicilian expedition. Through the speeches, Thucydides provides a very detailed picture of not only the course of the Sicilian expedition, but also of what is bound to happen in the future. In doing so, Thucydides reveals that he judges Nicias as one of the causes of the failure of the Sicilian expedition.
