이 논문은 투키디데스가『펠로폰네소스 전쟁사』에서 본래적으로 기획했던 상승과 하강사이에 담겨 있는 아테네의 오만과 몰락에 관한 이야기를연설과 행위의 장면을 따라가며 재구성하고 있다. 재구성은 펠로폰네소스동맹회의에서의 개전논쟁, 페리클레스의 연설, 미틸레네의 처리를 두고 펼쳐지는 클레온과 디오도토스의 논쟁, 코르키라의 내전에서 관찰되는 전쟁병리학, 멜로스 회담, 시실리 원정에 관하여 설전하는 니키아스와 알키비아데스의 논쟁을 중심으로 전개된다. 이러한 논쟁의 재구성은 아테네가 몰락한 원인을 보여주고 있다. 속성상 무한히 확장하려는 권력은 비극을 내재하고 있다는 관점에서 이 글의 테제는 법과 도덕을 고려하지 않고 무조건적으로 힘을 주장하는 강자의 오만은 몰락을 준비한다는 것이다. 나아가이러한 테제는 현재의 아메리카 제국에 중요한 함의를 가진다.
Abstract
This Paper is reconstructing the story of "The History of the Peloponnesian War" written by Thucydides who originnally tried to describe hybris and fall of Athene. The reconstruction follows the scenes of speechs (logoi) and actions (erga), which are showing clearly the rise and decline of Athene: debate of openning war in the Peloponnesian Alliance Conference, Speechs of Pericles, duel of Cleon and Diodotos on Mytilene, pathology of war on the basis of Corcyra, Melian-Dialog, and duel of Nikias and Alkibiades on Sicilia. Power immanences a tragedy so long as it is naturally unlimited expanding. The main argument of this articles is that the hybis of the powerful without law and morality is used to declining. This thesis would be profound in meaning to the present "American Empire".
