Abstract

The ancient Greek historian Thucydides, renowned for the establishment of modern historiography, wrote on the Peloponnesian War(431-404 BC). It was a very impressive and large scale civil war. Thucydides wrote about his own participation in the war just to inform the descendants of what had happened. In this book he made a very well known point: namely the growth of Athenian power during the previous 50 years panicked the Spartans and they were forced to wage war against the Athenians. Even Thucydides argued that this war was inevitable, and his frank statement of it tended to bring many readers to believe it easily, without sufficient deliberation, as though it had been fate. To some degree his theory is plausible when the cause of the war is considered structurally. However Athens didn’t enlarge and become more powerful in a consistent fashion since the end of the Persian War(478-431). Moreover, it is generally thought that both Athens and Sparta might not have been under circumstances which required them to engage in such wars unconditionally. In this paper two points will be reconsidered. Firstly, the years of Pentekontaetia(πεντηκονταετία) -literally 50- will be reviewed, showing that Athens was not always so powerful in the Mediterranean area. The next reconsideration will be a systematic study on the period beginning with the affair of Epidamnus to the outbreak of the Peloponnesian War. Through it we will see that this war did not develop in an unavoidable way. Indeed, it contained several possibilities that might have prevented war. We must not accept without criticism the argument of a historian from the 5th century BC, that a very significant and major war broke out inevitably. In this paper, I reconsider the objectives of the historian Thucydides by reanalyzing his thesis. Human affairs are scrutinized most persuasively if their complex and various causal factors are reviewed.
