Abstract

This study analyzes Alcibiades' speech advocating the Sicilian Expedition in Thucydides' History 6.16-18 from a narratological perspective. By applying narrative techniques such as dual focalization, echoing, irony, and foreshadowing, it examines how Thucydides exposes the dangers of political rhetoric and the degeneration of Athenian leadership. While Alcibiades' speech superficially echoes Pericles' language and rhetorical strategies, Thucydides creates an epistemic gap between the contemporary audience and later readers through authorial interventions. Key terms related to public and private interest, Athenian power(dynamis), and imperial policy are repeatedly echoed, yet their meanings are fundamentally distorted. Whereas Pericles emphasized communal values and restrained imperialism, Alcibiades appropriates the same rhetorical forms to justify private gain and unlimited expansion. Through foreshadowing, Thucydides reveals Alcibiades as the cause of Athens' downfall, transforming the speech into tragic irony. This narrative reconstruction explores the betrayal of Periclean ideals and the structural vulnerabilities of democracy.
