Abstract
This article discusses Thucydides’ abstract and symbolical style presented in the Sicilian Expedition Narrative by contrasting Diodorus Siculus’ Bibilotheca Historica, which deals with the same historical event, the Peloponnesian War. First of all, unlike Diodorus’ focus on historical facts, Thucydides does not limit his work in transferring historical facts of the Sicilian Expedition. For example, Diodorus uses Ephorus as his main historical source and describes the Sicilian Expedition in a brief summary. In contrast, Thucycides tries to portrait Athens through the description of the dramatic scenery and the speeches woven in the narrative of the historical events. When presenting Nicias’ speech. Thucydides declares that ‘Athenian Troops in Sicily is Athens herself.’ Furthermore, Thucydides suggests a notion of “a displaced polis” when he describes the battle scene at the Syracusan harbor. First, he depicts Athens as a polis with her failed imperial ambition, which results in locking Athens in a narrow region. Second, the final battle scene is presented as an image of Athenian dēmos, who has ‘lost their head. Last, the scene in the Assinarus river displays the downfall of Athens in a prolepsis. Finally, Thucydides criticizes Athens’ chaotic dēmokratia not by direct statements but through the tragic narrative structure of Sicilian Expedition.
