이 글은 기원전 427년 펠로폰네소스 전쟁 중 뮈틸레네가 일으킨 반란을 처리하기 위한 민회에서 행해진 클레온의 연설을 다루고 있다. 이 글은 다음과 같은 세 가지 점에 초점을 맞추어 그것을 분석한다. 첫째, 그가 민중의 분노를 다시 불러일으키기 위해서 어떻게 그들의 제국 지배 욕구를 자극하고 있는지, 그리고 어떻게 반대파에 대한 적개심을 환기시키면서 평범한 민중들phauloi을 결집시키려 하고 있는지를 설명한다. 둘째, 실질적인 토의보다는 말 자체의 경쟁에 몰두하는 아테네 정치 문화에 대한 클레온의 공격을 세밀히 분석하면서, 그 가운데 드러나는 아이러니의 의미를 고찰한다. 셋째, 클레온의 연설이 가지는 법정 연설적인 특징에 주목하면서, 이것이 구체적인 표현들과 수사적 전략들 속에서 어떻게 구현되고 있는지를 분석한다. 이러한 분석을 통해 클레온의 연설은 아테네의 제국 지배에 대한 가장 오만한 정당화의 표현이며 투퀴디데스는 이 연설을 통해서 아테네가 몰락의 길로 접어드는 시점에서 아테네의 가장 영향력 있었던 정치 지도자와 민중과의 상호작용을 보이고자 했음이 분명히 드러나게 된다.
Abstract
This article deals with Cleon’s speech in the so-called Mytilenian debate as described by Thucydides in his History 3.36-40. The speech is analyzed focusing on the following three aspects in particular. First, this article explores how Cleon is stimulating the demos’ desire for domination in order to rekindle their anger against the Mytilenians and how he is trying to unite the ordinary people(phauloi) while evoking hostility to their opposition. Second, this article analyzes Cleon’s attack on the contemporary Athenian political culture, which is devoted to the competition of the words rather than to the discussion of real issues and then examines the meaning of the irony revealed in it. Third, this article pays attention to the characteristics of judicial oratory in Cleon's speech and examines how they are implemented in the expressions and rhetorical strategies of the speech. Through these analyses this article aims to show more concretely that Cleon's speech was the most arrogant justification for the Athenian empire and that by presenting the speech in detail, Thucydides intended to demonstrate how the most influential political leader of Athens and the people interacted at the point of the beginning of the downfall of the Athenian empire.
