Abstract

This study aims to provide a comparative analysis of the discussions and interpretations of Plato’s Phaedrus 249B5-C5 by the Middle Platonist Alcinous (2nd century) and the Neoplatonist Syrianus (5th century). Plato presents in this passage the process of understanding through “passing from a plurality of perceptions to a unity gathered together by reasoning” as recollection. This implicit formulation may be interpreted as encompassing both concept formation originating from sensible experience and recollection of intelligible forms, thereby posing a hermeneutical challenge distinct from the theory of recollection discussed in Plato’s other dialogues (Meno and Phaedo). In addressing this interpretive problem, late ancient Platonists proposed different solutions. Alcinous, in his Handbook of Platonism, limited the object of recollection to “natural concepts” (physikē ennoia) inherent in the soul. While borrowing this terminology from Stoic philosophy, he traced their origin to Platonic recollection (anamnēsis) and reinterpreted Aristotelian induction as a catalyst that awakens innate knowledge. In contrast, Syrianus, in his commentary on the Phaedrus (preserved in Hermias’ Commentary on Phaedrus) is presumed to have taken a more sophisticated approach. He conceived a hierarchical ascent model moving from sensation to the intelligible forms through concepts, assigning to the concepts termed “later-generated universals” (to katholou to hysterogenēs) the role of “putting forth” (proballein) the soul’s innate logoi. Through this, the human soul proceeds to the stage of recollecting (anamnēsis) the intelligible forms located in the Demiurgic intellect. These differences reflect not merely individual philosophical positions but, to a certain extent, the respective philosophical orientations and methodological characteristics of Middle Platonism and Neoplatonism. While Alcinous maintained an epistemology based on innate knowledge while seeking a compromise with Aristotelian induction, Syrianus appears to have pursued a more sophisticated philosophical synthesis aimed at integrating Aristotelian empiricism within Platonic idealism. Through a comparative analysis of these two philosophers’ interpretations of recollection theory, this study elucidates how the central epistemological problem concerning the relationship between empirical cognition and innate knowledge developed into two differentiated philosophical solutions within the late ancient Platonic tradition.
