Abstract
This paper is an attempt to elucidate the nature of the self-knowledge which Socrates emphasizes from the viewpoint that the issues of self-knowledge and soul-leading(psykhagōgia) are closely related in Plato's Phaedrus. For this purpose, firstly, I observed that self-knowledge and soul-leading are already implicit in the prologue and self-knowledge requires the knowledge of the nature of soul. Secondly, by considering Socrates's second speech, I tried to explain that the human soul has a divine part, i.e. intelligence and human beings, through the knowledge of Forms, can resemble God in the long run. Thirdly, I examined Socrates's critique against the contemporary rhetoric and his idea of the true rhetoric and I tried to show that the true rhetoric leads to self-knowledge through a knowledge of the soul. In Phaedrus Socrates shows that self-examination should be extended to the argument of metaphysical level concerning the nature of soul and the Forms: It surpasses the level that he urges us to know our own intellectual limits as is shown in Plato's early dialogues.
